Fritz Wunderlich - unique and unforgettable

"To this day, he probably still ranks as the greatest lyric tenor of the 20th century, but for certain he is one of the most significant German singers. When Luciano Pavarotti was asked during an interview in 1990 who he thought was the most outstanding tenor in history, he answered; ‘Fritz Wunderlich’.” That’s what Wikipedia says about the tenor, who would have celebrated his 80th birthday on September 24. But what do six selected opera stars from the past and present have to say about this exceptional vocal artist?

You will find the answer here, and you can also get a musical impression of why Fritz Wunderlich continues to enjoy this legendary reputation among colleagues, critics and classic fans to this day:

Joseph Calleja
."It’s an occupational hazard, I suppose – whether we want to or not, classical singers, especially we tenors tend to listen to our colleagues a little too analytically.

In the case of a sterling role model like Fritz Wunderlich, however, this is almost impossible to do – the “sudden” impact of this artist’s singing is so spontaneous, so dead right, we just dispense with all the analytical microscopy, sit back and delight in the forceful combination of a sunlit Mediterranean voice quality blended with a Central European musical and dramatic intelligence that only a truly charismatic tenor can provide.

How unfortunate I came along too late to hear him in person – but I will always treasure the inspiring memory of one of the very greatest and be grateful that so much of his music-making is preserved for us on recordings that have justifiably continued to remain popular in all the intervening years."

Nicolai Gedda
